The CUIP Tech Wiki

A Documentation Repository for tech matters as they occur in the CPS context.

Welcome

This wiki is meant for the convenience of technology workers in the CUIP program and at CPS schools connected with CUIP. This includes

  • CUIP staff;
  • CUIP/NSP-Techs -- University of Chicago students working with CUIP through the Neighborhood Schools Program in technology assistance roles at their schools
  • School-based CPS personnel dealing with the technology at their CUIP-affiliated schools -- "Technology Coordinators" or "Techcos" by generalization, whether or not specifically under that title.

We also welcome others working in the same contexts.

Participants are invited to read and use the materials posted here, edit and improve the articles, suggest new ones, and create new ones.

The overall topic is mutual advice in working with computers and related technologies in the Chicago Public Schools environment.

Rules and Guidelines edit

  • Do not post any passwords, networking keys, program installation license keys, etc.
  • Do not post any CPS student info.
  • Do not post info about any other individuals that should be considered confidental.
  • Do not post CPS technical information that probably should be considered confidential.
    • It's okay to fill in structural/technical descriptions up to some level, wth discretion, and direct the reader where to find or ask for omitted specifics.
  • Do not post copyrighted or protected texts, images, or programs without owner's permission.
  • This is a private wiki, under that designation with Wikispaces. To some extent that means errors or indiscretions in the above will not get into search engines and will not wildly go public. So, please do be careful, but don't sweat the privacy issues overmuch.

Rationale for this TechWiki edit
There are a number of resources already in place, what's the need for another one?
  • CPS First Class has many tech help resources, especially in the District-Wide Technology Coordinators Area.
    • But these are not visible to the University of Chicago NSP students.
    • For that matter, not all the Techcos (and computer lab teachers, and tech lead teachers) in the CUIP group have access.
    • We will ask permission to copy/link/repost/credit some of the great articles and screenshots in that repository.

  • There are any number of technical advice and documentation websites. / I can get most of my tech questions answered by a Google or similar general search.
    • Very good! Where there is need for general-context tech help, we can again link to (or with permission, copy) those resources.
    • The emphasis here is on the CPS environment, so many of our topics will not have discussion or help sites outside.
  • There are mailing lists and outside-maintained websites for CPS Techcos already.
    • We are eager to work together and share experiences and resources.
    • One factor for CUIP is making sure our University students can participate.
    • Mailing lists, web forums / discussion boards, and nings all have some very advantageous features. This CPS/CUIP Tech resource has ended up in a Wiki by advice of an initial survey of likely participants, and for the reason of encouraging wide participation in editing and creating resources -- for each other.

Organization and Contents edit

For the most part the top-level structure of topics (and some specific pages) is laid out in the listing in the left margin. The conceptual outline and links keyed from that are on the Outline Contents page, and that is a great place to start.

A more complete (but equally manual) outline-structured contents page is given on the Contents page.

A wikispaces automatic listing of all the pages in this space, in alphabetical order, is given on the Automatic all pages listing page.

Please try to keep topics readily findable, by choice of name and by judicious tagging. Authors who know how to do wikitext aliasing/redirection are encouraged to do so!

It's fine to make some "stub articles" as a way of reviewing or laying out a broad topic. Use of the discussion tabs is also highly encouraged!
